Typical plaster ceiling repairs we can help with include collapsed ceilings, either due to water ingress or DIY gone wrong (IMPORTANT! Don't pull lining paper off an old ceiling - it is often the only thing holding the dried-out ceiling plaster together!).
Water damage is another commonly ceiling repair in Edinburgh. Water from a leaky roof or from an upstairs pipe can cause unsightly staining to your ceiling and even cause the whole ceiling to come down.
Original lath and plaster ceilings, like the one in the photo are constructed from thin strips of wood (laths) which are attached across the ceiling joists. These then have two or three layers of plaster over them. Many homes in Edinburgh have his type of ceiling - they are usually of a high quality and many of these ceilings have been in place for over 100 years - but repairs do require the correct materials, along with some skill and expertise.
Cracks in ceiling can happen in any building new or old. This can be caused by movement or vibrations in the structure of the building or by plaster drying out and shrinking. Cracked ceilings are not necessarily a serious issue but they can be unsightly. They are usually a straightforward fix, but again it takes a bit of know-how to do it properly and and ensure hairline cracks don't reappear after a few months.
